Software-Defined Wide Area Network: Let’s Learn More About SD-WAN

By definition, SD-WAN or software defined wide area network refers to a software-defined networking (SDN) technology application created in cloud data centers, and wide area networking (WAN) which are used to connect outside networks such as data centers and branch offices over large geographic area or distances. Instead of installation of specialized or proprietary WAN technology that often involve costly proprietary hardware or fixed circuits, enterprise clients demand more open, flexible and cloud-based WAN technologies thus SD-WAN from sd wan providers came to existence.

SD-WAN leverages current hybrid WAN architectures through utilization of centralized application based policy controller with analytics network visibility, application, and software overlay. SD-WAN makes business applications’ delivery more cost-effective, improving an efficiency of branch-IT through automation, allowing enterprises to lower their MPLS costs, making more companies switch to SD-WAN technologies. There are three categories of SD-WAN which include cloud-managed routers and firewalls, VPN services and devices, and internet cloud optimization. Cloud managed routers and firewalls are low cost and familiar vendor but no real time adaptation to cloud traffic ISP performance issues and generally your private LAN is accessed. For VPN services and devices, they are usually lower cost as compared to MPLS, adapts site-to-site traffic to network performance changes, strong QoS for site-to-site and all-in-one firewalling. Internet cloud optimization automatically adapts to public cloud traffic and site-to-site VPN, does not touch your private network data, easy to use, compliments with current security or firewall and lower in cost as compared to SLA-backed circuits.

With new SD-WAN offerings of sd wan vendors, securing and improving internet connections makes it more competitive with traditional or legacy WAN technologies like MPLS or T-1. It is also used in replacing costly solutions, with virtualization technology applying virtual private networking (VPN) technology and security to broadband internet connectivity. It removes the costly routing hardware and provides flexibility through provisioning connections and services controlled through a cloud software, allowing scaling up connections during peak demand times. The ultimate goal of SD-WAN technology is to be able to deliver a simple, secure and business-class cloud-based and cloud-enabled WAN connection with as much software-based and open technology as possible, delivering basic WAN connections as well as do premium business services like WAN optimization, applications delivery control (ADC), security, Naas or VPN. What is the difference of SD and SD-WAN? SD-WAN is more focused on the routing capabilities of WAN’s software-defined application, connecting an organization’s data centers and various locations, while SDN concentrates within the core networks of a service provider or LAN.
